GE MDS Introduces the Next Generation of Secure Wireless Monitoring for
Remote, Mission Critical Applications- MDS SD4™
Rochester, NY - July 29, 2008:
GE Digital
Energy announces the MDS SD4™, a long range, low power consumption and solar
friendly industrial radio ideal for customers operating in rugged, remote
environments such as the oil and gas, utility, water/waste water and rail
industries.
The much-anticipated SD4, the next generation of MDS licensed radios,
sets new standards for modern wireless Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
(SCADA) networks. Its 30% longer range means that more remote points can be
monitored at greater distance with fewer access points, resulting in lower
infrastructure costs and more efficient networks. The exceptionally low power
requirements reduce the size of batteries and solar panels. A remote solar site
can be configured at half the size and cost of competitive solutions. In
conjunction with an integrated sleep mode, the SD4 can operate 2-5 times longer
than competing radios.
With a wider temperature range of operation, the SD4 meets the stringent
environmental requirements for mission-critical applications, as well as the
approvals that support it. The SD4 extends the capacity and capability of
existing MDS 4710 networks by providing backward compatibility and adding the
ability to expand into Ethernet networks. The addition of Ethernet networking
lays the groundwork for future technology migration into highly secure IP
networks.
"We've raised the bar in performance, durability and flexibility for
SCADA radios. The SD4 integrates seamlessly into existing MDS 4710/4790 radio
systems, and is future-proof, providing customers with the foundation for the
services of the future," stated Roberto Vengoechea, General Manager, GE Digital
Energy - MDS. "With the SD4, we are meeting both the short and long-term
wireless communication needs of our customers giving them the ability to add
functionality through firmware upgrades and hardware support for both legacy and
emerging interfaces. " The MDS SD4 is FCC/ETSI/CE certified, and meets Hazardous
Location-UL Class 1 div 2, Groups A, B, C & D specifications. It also meets
FCC 6.25 kHz rebanding requirements, as well as IEEE 1613 for noise immunity
operation in electric substation environments. The unit is compliant with the
RoHS/WEEE lead-free environmental directive.
